8 years rigorous imprisonment to a Police Sargent for bribery

The Colombo High Court has convicted a Police Sargent attached to the Police Station – Gokarella on all 4 charges of the indictment served by the Bribery Commission against the accused for obtaining a bribe of Rs.5000. 

The learned High Court Judge, Mr. Vikum Kaluarachchi has sentenced 8 years rigorous imprisonment by 2years for each charge. Furthermore, a fine of Rs.3000/- for each charge and Rs.5000/- penalty was sentenced. The complainant who is a driver by profession has been solicited Rs.5000/- by the accused to not to raise objection for granting bail to two friends of the complainant. The Investigation Officers of the Bribery Commission have arranged a raid on a complaint received from the complainant. Accordingly, the accused was taken into custody when obtaining the bribe from the complainant.
