The High Court of Colombo has imposed 14 Years Rigorous Imprisonment for a Labour Officer attached to Mathara District Labour Office for soliciting and accepting a gratification

Former Labour Officer, H.N. Sunil Lal attached to District Labour Office Mathara was convicted by the Colombo High Court Judge Hon. Mr. A. K. M. Patabendhige on 6 th August 2021 for all four counts of the indictment served by the Director General of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.

The Accused was charged under section 19(b) and 19(c) of the Bribery Act for solicitation of Rs.60,000/- and acceptance of Rs.30,000/- from a person who was running a Bicycle and Three-wheel Service Center and it was solicited for calculating E.P.F amount to be paid to the employees. Upon a complaint from the owner of such service center a raid was organized and it was headed by CI Pushpakumara along with other officers PC/Amarasingha the Decoy, SI/Weerathunga, PS/Hasam, PC/Randika. The Indictment was filed on 6/6/2018 and after a lengthy trial the Learned High court Judge delivered his judgment imposing 14 years rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs.5000/- for each count and a penalty of Rs.30,000/-. The prosecution was conducted by Assistant Director Legal Mrs. Anusha Sammandapperuma on behalf of the Bribery Commission.
