5 Years Rigours Imprisonment for former Divisional Secretary of Akurana

Today High Court Judge Mr. Gihan Kulathunga sentenced former Divisional Secretary of the Akurana Divisional Secretary M.H.M. Niyaz for 5 years Rigorous Imprisonment, Penalty of Rs. 50,000/- & a fine of Rs. 10,000/- over bribery charges.

The Bribery Commission had filed an indictment in the High Court of Colombo under case bearing No. 1983/13 against the former Akurana Divisional Secretary for a soliciting & accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 from a businessman for approving a permit relating to explosives license for a rock quarry on May 16, 2012 as well as to assist this businessman in future. The 2nd accused M. Ali pleaded guilty for charges leveled against him in an earlier occasion in the same case.
