Two-year Rigorous Imprisonment imposed on a Transport Manager of the Road Passenger Transport Authority

Colombo High Court Judge Amal Ranaraja sentenced a Transport Manager attached to the Road Passenger Transport Authority of North-Western Province on 07.02.2024 after pleading guilty to all the charges of the case HCB 178/2022, filed against him by the Commission following a raid conducted in 2019.

On 03rd April 2019, indictments were served against the said Transport Manager under Section 19 (b) and (c) of the Bribery Act No. 11 of 1954 for accepting a gratification of Rs. hundred thousand (Rs. 100,000/-) before the decoy of the raid Commission conducted.

Accordingly, the learned Judge imposed a fine of Rs. five thousand (Rs. 5000/-) for each count, amounting to a total of Rs. Twenty Thousand (Rs. 20,000/-), and a 6-month simple imprisonment in failing to pay the said fine. In addition, the learned Judge sentenced a two-year rigorous imprisonment to run consecutively and was suspended for 5 years. Furthermore, the learned Judge ordered to recover the bribed Rs. hundred thousand as a penalty.

Mrs. Udari Kumarihami, Assistant Director (Legal) of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, led the prosecution.
